Great job!  I hadn't read this since I beta-ed it and you put some nice touches in here.  I feel Mark's motivation - and voice - more strongly now, and it's great to see and hear that even when he's under such difficult circumstances.  Love that Samuels asked him where he was for five months.  You know that I've been wondering that myself ...

What really angers me about Mark's condition? That a little caution, and maybe a couple years delay, might have prevented it.

In Teasing Secrets from the Dead, Dr. Emily Craig (a forensic anthropologist and certified medical illustrator) spends some time describing children's bones. Reading up on this subject, it is notable that a four-year-old child does not have solid vertebrae; rather, they have three irregular pieces (shaped sort of like jacks)connected by very tough cartilage. The bones fuse as the child grows, becoming pretty much one bone between the ages of 8 and 10.

The point is, Mark's chip was implanted in him at a time where it could be reasonably assumed that rapid growth and fusion of the vertebrae would be shortly taking place, and therefore the chip could be compromised. I really wonder what they were thinking.

This series is so darn good...When's the next helping? I love your writing! :)

I've just read the story for the fifth...(?), sixth...(?) time. I love it. I like the way Mark pulls himself together and tries to go on with his life.

What will happen next?

I finally got around to re-reading all six chapters in one go.  This is a great character study of Mark, watching him deal with a crisis he can't solve or run away from, and working to overcome anger and self-pity.

Poor Princess too -any chance she'll decide to throw Mark over for Jason? (kidding)

I like how your stories flow so smoothly.  Such a thing really takes a lot of work, and I admire that ability.  This series overall has been great to read.  I've reread so many of the pieces in part due to your writing style.

I can't wait to read more.

This is an absolutely fantastic Universe.

I like how realistically you're approaching the situation for Mark, and the fact that you've not let him recover from his paralyzed state quickly.

Sucks for him, but I'm really interested to see how he'll cope in his new capacity in Team 7 and interact with his former team mates.

Author's Response: Thanks! When I started this, I saw there being one fic during which Mark would recover. I now know there will be at least three (Prodigal is #1) and it's starting to look like it might be four...(not counting Return to the Red Planet, which is set during the same timeperiod but which isn't about Mark).

I really enjoyed this.  It seems different from a lot of your other work in that we don't get a mission at all here, but how Mark deals without a mission is part of what is so wonderful.  I am also looking forward to seeing how Mark and Jason deal with their new positions.

I told you privately how much I liked it but now I'll say so publicly. You're ability to mess out characters and stay with those characterizations is wonderful. Your vision of what happened after the end of the BotP series is captivating.  Can't wait to see how Mark's life works itself out and how Jason's leading the team evolves.
