Kozaburo entered the drug store with a trepidation that made him feel the fool. He was a grown man. He was a scientist. This was just a natural function, as old as humanity … older, really, given the shared experience of the rest of the mammalian animal kingdom’s females.

Except the rest of the mammalian animal kingdom’s males didn’t get sent for supplies. At first he’d thought to send one of the boys, but the sound of Jun’s wailing had sent them scattering like cockroaches at the first sign of light. Plus, what kind of adult shoved such an important responsibility onto children?

His little girl was turning into a woman. It should be a magical moment, but as Kozaburo stared at the bewildering selection of options, all he felt was overwhelmed. She was still at home, probably still hiding in the bathroom. The longer he took here, the longer she would suffer, and he could kick himself for not having anticipated the need to have supplies around in the first place.

But which supplies? Good lord, maybe he should call one of the women in the office.

Man up, Koz. She’s counting on you.

In the end, he grabbed a wide selection of options so that Jun could make her own decision on what she preferred. Despite his desire to slink under the counter as the cashier smiled and rang him up, he was proud of himself. It wasn’t only Jun growing up a bit more this day. His children had taught him so much over the years, far more than he’d ever imagined.

Still, as other patrons kept watching him with knowing grins, Kozaburo wasn’t sure he wanted to do this again. Next time, perhaps he’d treat an emergency run as a learning experience for one of the boys. If they were going to chase girls, then there were some facts of life they had to come to terms with.

In the meantime, he had a mission of mercy to complete.
