Yet another fan of Battle of the Planets, who used to rush home after school to catch part of an episode. I love the team dynamics of this show, and like writing fanfic which are big on character development and plot.

In other life, I love good character driven science fiction, drawing, painting, writing and making handcrafted jewelry. My hands and my head are always busy!

Ooooooh, another story about the hidden support personnel around G-Force! Neato! At first the beginning of the story reminded me of those old “choose your own adventure” stories, but I quickly moved past that. ;D  I was kinda worried this was going to start dragging, but it quickly picked up pace with the ‘coffee’ incident. Yep, people are very particular about their coffee. I like how that was used in more than one spot, as well, giving the story continuity. I also love the Andersons response to the name of their new nemesis! Hah!

Re: Zark – When you jumped from the advice to suddenly after the visit, I thought I was going to get gypped of what would surely be a memorable visit to Nerve Center. I should have known better. ;D  When you think of it, a neurotic robot with that much power having a bright yellow pet dog that likes to carry around a wrench WOULD be attention-getting. Something the mind would have to chew on for a bit before accepting that, yes, you did indeed see what you saw. Note: Have you considered listing this story as an answer to the “Rewrite a silly episode” challenge? It is a rather silly episode in some ways, and this was a great reworking of the episode through different eyes. Looking at the challenge, it looks like it would apply.

Author's Response: Thanks, Julie.  The whole second person thing was an experience, and I basically did it just to see what it was like.  Thanks for the heads-up on the 'silly episode' challenge.  I have a couple of responses to that one, now.

Summary: The title is borrowed from a movie, the characters are borrowed from Sandy Frank, and the original idea was borrowed from Springie. But the story is all mine.

The war with Spectra has ended, leaving Mark, Jason and Princess in comas.

Excerpt

If he could have, Jason would have gasped. On the bed to his right lay Mark. He looked pale and still… lifeless… his eyes were closed and there was no movement. Did he, Jason, look like that too?

Princess sat between his bed and Mark’s, and took Jason’s hand. He wished that he could feel her touch.

“I’m sorry, Jason…” she said, tears streaming down her face, “I’m sorry I wasn’t convincing enough. But I know you’re there, and I know that you can hear me. I won’t give up on you!”

I hadn't had a chance to read this before, so it was a treat to read it while approving it. This was a great read and had some interesting ideas about the Spirit as well as how the implants might work. The ending was a little bitter-sweet considering the bond all 3 now had, but in a way right considering the personality of the Commander. Thanks for the great read. :)

This was a nice short piece about a subject we've all thought about concerning the Eagle. I like the created hobbies. Geez, Jinpei with a violin? Where's one of those shuriken?!?

Interesting how you had Jun seeing other guys from time to time, but no inclination of jealosy from Ken when he observes it. With Koji, we know she's dated (or seen) other guys. And Ken does seem rather oblivious at times, so that's no huge surprise in an outward way. But you do have to wonder what is going on inside.

Which is what makes this fanfic so fun, since it's first-person from Ken. :)

It looks like some of the formatting here might have been messed up when you uploaded it. There are stray exclamation points here and there, and spare spaces.

Example: Rumi Boronbo, th! e girl in question, had been held hostage by Gallactor in order to ran som highly

The last part, should that have been "... in order to run some highly..."?

If I ever get the ADV DVD's I'm going to have to watch this episode again, expecially at the end. I think I've only seen the BotP version. From the sound of this, the ending is slightly different. It would be fun to compare. :)

Author's Response:

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the heads-up! I thought I caught all those pesky errors in the text. I'll fix those pronto.

I hadn't really considered having Ken express what he thought about Koji. I get the impression that Jun didn't publicize her dates, but Ken knows about them anyway and prefers to keep his cards close to his chest. :-)

I like how you combine this fic and "Publicity 1" together by sharing a scene. The Condor meeting a copycat? With the way you describe the fanbase now surrounding them, I'm surprised he hasn't. ;)

Nice to see all this from another point a view, and we KNOW the Condor looks at the world with slightly different eyes than Ken. Oh, and also loved how Joe has named the certain look Ken gets in his eyes when he's thinking about things.

You do realize that you need to do Jun now, don't you? ;D

Author's Response: Yup, Jun's is done. I'm going to run it  in Bird Scramble before I post it here. :-)

Not many people can write 7-Zark-7 at all, much less do it in a serious manner. This story really excels at showing the "Tin Can" in a serious light without making fun of him. I really like how you have thought out the various functions that Zark performs as well as the unique aspects of his personality and 1-Rover-1. Then there is the interaction with the G-Force team, which we hear about through transmissions.

Using Teresa as an outside onlooker, so we can see the annoying little robot through her eyes was a good hook. As she learns about him, we do as well. When she starts to sympathize, so do we (and I still snort at 1-Rover-1 waking Teresa up! Hah!). The progression in character development and character understanding is excellent.

Not only is this a great story about Zark, but also about the support personnel that support him and G-Force. We don’t get so see much about them at all. Let’s face it, without all those faceless/nameless people, G-Force wouldn’t be able to function.

So many things make this one of my most favorite fics!

I've loved this fanfic ever since it ran in Bird Scramble. As G-1 and G-3 get-togethers, this is one of the best. You've used such great imagery all through the fic, scenes that work (and aren't extra, being there just to be there), and a great over-all premise in which this to happen. It doesn't stick out from the other fanfics of this same AU, remaing right-on-the-spot on the characterizations.

One of my favorite images is seeing the warship hovering over them. I don't know why, but that one has always stuck in my mind. You've also described the emotions of the characters in a very nice way that I felt flowed really well without feeling mushy or swarmy.

Congrats on a very well-written fanfic. :)

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this yet!

I love the universe you set up with Defiance. The time and care you put into plotting shows in so many of the tiny details. For instance, how Galactor works, the team dynamics (which really are a melded Gatch/BotP), the 'warship'. Then there are the added characters, such as Rachel, the G5's family, Key's doomed girlfriend. Each adds a wonderful depth to this new 'universe'.

Your prose is rich in description and emotion, although occasionally the 'violent' descriptions you use at the calmer moments may be better kept for other occasions (but that's just me). Thanks for proofing this so well. The spelling and grammar errors are kept to a very low minimum which makes reading the prose very easy. A reader very quickly becomes enveloped in the story itself without paying attention to the mechanics of the writing itself.

I was wondering how you were going to handle the Galactor order of an assassination. I don't think I'm the only one waiting for you to post the next chapter after Rachael's action at the end of chapter 5.6! :)

Yep, I can see that you were indeed in a gloomy mood when you wrote this. ;D Still, it has a lot of great symbols in it, a man having to come to grips with the death of his 'family'. I liked the charities you came up with, and I was immediately matching them up with the most likely team member. That's one thing families who have had someone go missing: there is nothing, not even a body, to have closure with. I liked how you had President Kane be the one who was the one to come forward to give Anderson the closure he needed.

A short piece, but highly effective. Congrats!

Great job in filling in the blanks! I really like how you took that bit of talk between Jason and Princess when they first arrived in the base and created a backstory to explain it. Sal already mentioned it, but I will anyway: nice how you 'fixed' the part of Mark throwing out the whip.

This is a nice episode from the point of view that this is a different villian than Spectra (although they still have their hands in things). I like how you filled in details on who/what Urgos is and their culture. Great job in making a 'silly' episode make sense and have some depth!

Author's Response: Thanks, Julieann. With Urgos et al I find the politics rather intriguing. I mean, we know why Spectra is invading: their planet is dying and they consider Earth the most viable piece of alternative real estate, but why do Urgos, Tramulus and all those other bit players want to join the party in competition with Spectra? The question keeps me scribbling. As do reviews!

After reading this I do agree with what you mentioned in your authors notes: that a swear word isn't always the best way to get an idea across. The first portion did seem to have way too many, and for me, detracted from my enjoyment in reading.

Mark didn't come across as very true to character to me. I think it was that he was too accepting to the idea of Jason just running off and quitting, and then not looking at evidence himself. Mark can be just as paranoid as anyone else that what he sees on the surface might not be the whole truth. ;)

If anything, the way the characters act and react in this fic, I would guess that this is an earlier mission, not a later one, as the team dynamics are not quite there (but well on their way to developing). This is also indicated (to me) by the fact Mark is still becoming accustomed to using his teams potential to its fullest, which starts with listening to their suggestions (in their specific fields of expertise).

This was a good fic showing how a leader has to be well-rounded and not just give orders, but also to listen to those under him.The basic premise of the story is an interesting one: someone who was once associated with Spectra (accidentally through a husband) but not from the planet. I also found it funny how Zoltar took exception to being next on the woman’s list. Yeah, he would react! ;D

It's interesting the different takes in sequels to how the relationship between the G-1 and G-3 end. I can see how Mark's tendency to be shy around the opposite sex could get him in hot water with Princess, especially after the war has ended and she might have expectations on the direction they should head. The accident was a good way to bring it all to a head, having a turning-point in the relationship. A nice part was the comparison that only with this were they treated like heroes. It's true that for most of what they did, they were unsung heroes. One Nitpick that has bothered me in the days since I read this: "The boys had never told her about some of the ... side-effects ... of the implants."

If she's been married, this part doesn't make sense. She's had sex before. She would know what the side-effects were. And if you were referring to the side-effects of 2 people who both had the implants making love to each other, then how would the boys know, unless they had gotten together? ;D  So, I'm really not sure what you were trying to say with this within the context of this particular fanfic.

Nice ending with Mark reflecting the dream had a different ending. :)

Thanks for the good read! :)

Author's Response: Glad you liked it. Still one of my favourites, too. Thank Dei for the idea of having an accident; the first draft didn\'t. I do like the way it brings all their different roles together, and it shows that they have changed -- I can\'t imagine Princess forgetting CPR in the old days. It\'s also a concrete bridge between their old relationship as teammates and their new one as civilians; the what they learned back then is still useful, even though the war is over. So, yeah, the accident was good.\r\n\r\nThe \"side-effects\" was more an attempt at a laugh than anything else. Vague thoughts that the male version had side-effects the female one didn\'t. You\'re right, the boys may not even have told each other about them. But, yeah, I wonder if I\'d include that line if I wrote it now; then again, I\'m not writing at all at the moment, so it\'s hard to tell.\r\n\r\nThanks again!\r\nSandy

Nice response to the challenge! I like Jinpei's idea of how to destroy the mecha while he's trying to tackle it alone and stay alive at the same time. Also very good work with the descriptions and movement. I was able to follow it in my head very easily. :)

Oh man, truly horrifying. One classic Mary-Sue trait after another in quick succession. Glad I didn't eat just before reading. :D

Only things I can think of to make it worse would have been the perfect singing voice (although the recorder part showed the perfect music talent) and being Ken and Jun kid from the future (although being Nambu's kid is bad enough). I would say this was a rousing success as a response to a Mary-Sue challenge!

Author's Response: Thanks, Juliann. That was a fun one to write. And she's actually Ken and Jun's grandkid. Nambu is their time-traveling kid.

I think I like the BotP version best, but that's just me. :)

I have only 2 nits.

One that you have several version of "He's taking the worst". They can't all be taking it the worst, or the hardest, or such. Maybe being more specific on how in an individual way? But then, you do that as the paragraphs progress.

The second is Mark. He's not unaffected by Princess, so I'm not sure he would be talking to Tiny quite that way, wondering how to 'get out of it'. I can see "how could this ever work?" or the conflict with him being in command over her, that kind of thing. Mark strikes me as being a worrier about things he takes so personally. The relationship between these two is one of the big differences between BotP and Gatchaman.

But that's just me. :)

I like how you used Tiny for this, he's a badly unused character, so it was nice to see all this from his perspective. You also didn't make it really obvious who it was that was speaking, so it was fun to figure it out as I was reading.

Kinda sad at the end, Tiny knowing he's changed, too. Not knowing if he would ever wake up, and knowing if he did, everything for him has changed.

Good job. :)

Oh lord, the possibility of breeding. Now THAT would drive you to drink (and possibly suicidal tendencies).

Author's Response: Thanks for the review, Julie. Drink and probably rubber walls, I'd say. Poor Chief Anderson. He'd probably had a few when he wrote the initial letter.

Summary:

A Scavengers/Out Of The Shadows crossover written by Diinzumo and Jane Lebak

An accident causes a clashing of universes, and Ken Washio and Mark Washington end up switching places. Lost in each other's world, Mark tries to be a leader for these older versions of his family while Ken, still in mourning for a dead brother, tries to change history, and ensure that this new universe never loses its Condor.

What a fun romp through both fanfic universes! I stayed up reading this instead of working on my own stuff. The difference in command style, bantering and the inter-personal relationships were fun to see, as well as seeing through the eyes of the G1 the characters of the teams themselves. I liked how Ken and Chief Anderson came to initially trust each other. As well as Mark's first flight in the new G1 jet and his first look at the new God Phoenix. I would be horrified, too. ;)

Halfway through I was hoping Mark would meet the future Joe, and I wasn't disappointed. Now I have to go read Out Of The Shadows again. :)

The relationship between Mark and Jun was a little bittersweet, especially how it ends. Jun really isn't any better off, and I'm not sure Ken really learned all that much despite Princess getting into his face.

We should get you two together to write more often. :)

Oh, this was cute. I made the mistake of reading it while at work and about snorked my tea. The only complaint I have is that this is waaaaay too short!

>Mister Rumplebum. (When he turns eighteen, I will use this information against him.)

Okay, I'm putting in a formal request. I want to see this! That could be a hilarious fanfic! :)

Author's Response: Thanks for reviewing, Julieann. I'm not sure how Anderson will use Mister Rumplebum against Jason but I imagine he's saving it for a rainy day.

In part one, there is a little part that says: "Do you know You'd only be putting yourself in danger, and your father didn't want that.". Looks like something is missing in there.

I remember reading this from years ago, and it was fun to reread it. Talk about 2 kids who have been, for the most part, way too serious for too much of their lives.

Author's Response: Thanks!  Yeah looks like several paragraphs went AWOL.  Have put them back in now but it would not let me format the text so who knows what it looks like.  lol!

This is a great 'what-if' story. At first I had to get straight the new names introduced, but once I did, it flowed nicely. Reading through this, it makes me wonder about the ISO in particular, though. Hated by so many? There has to be a bigger story there, too. :)

I remember reading this one in the early archive before the new software. It's stayed with me all these year.

Great visuals, Dei, with a lot of emotion and story in a short amount of space. Even more than that, it is memoriable. Great job!
